English Bible Conversation in Holice

In September, we also started a Bible Conversation class in Holice, a small city with about 5,000 people located about 5 miles from our home in Horní Jelení. Unfortunately, only three people joined this course. Of those three, two dropped out after two sessions. After speaking with the third student, he and I both decided it would be better if he came to Horní Jelení to join the group here. So, starting next week, he'll be coming to the group which meets in our home. So, for this fall, instead of two groups meeting in two different cities, we'll have one group meeting in our home. I was surprised and disappointed that there wasn't more interest in this kind of a class in Holice, especially since Holice has about 3,000 more people than our home town.

Is this a class where you are teaching English? How much English does the average Chech know already?

Actually quite a few ... back in 1992 when I first came here (it was Czechoslovakia then), hardly anyone spoke English. Things have changed a lot since then. It is not unusual now for Czechs to speak English, at various levels. It is the main foreign language that children learn in school (German is a distant second), and many folks have to use it for their professions. Just about everybody who comes to the class in Horní Jelení uses English in their jobs, or they learned it in college. The class itself, though, is really about the Bible ... we just English as our means of communication.

I have a friend over there. His job is military and as an 'advisor'. I'm quite glad to see that you are there providing a ballance. It is also good to hear positive news from that part of the world as well.

Thank you for keeping updates, I do enjoy reading your posts.
